Reader settings
Preferences come in two homes — site settings (how the whole site looks) and wiki settings (how articles read):

Appearance is the light/dark switch: Light uses your chosen palette, Dark is the near-black reading mode, and System follows your device. The palette choice applies whenever you’re in light — it’s remembered across trips into dark.
Where to find them:
- On wide screens, articles carry two round buttons docked at the article’s right edge — the sun (site settings) on top, wiki settings (the “Aa” button) below it. Click one and its panel opens beside it.
- On narrower screens, the sun button lives in the navbar (site settings). Wiki settings are currently a wide-screen surface.
Rows grey out when they can’t affect the current page — Wikilinks on a page with no links, References on a page with no sources.
Preferences are stored in your browser (per device), take effect instantly, and don’t need an account.
References are off by default. Articles read as clean prose; switch
References on to see the [1] markers and the source list at the bottom of
each page. Notes ([note 1] hover asides) are on by default. See

Navigating a page
- Contents — on wide screens (≥1300px) a table of contents runs alongside the article; its header jumps back to the top. On narrower screens, the ☰ button in the corner opens the same contents as a popover.
- Collapsible sections — click any section heading (or its chevron) to fold that section away; click again to reopen.
- Hover previews — rest on a wikilink and, if the target page declares a
<description>, a one-line preview appears. Reference and note markers show their content the same way. - Times are yours — every timestamp on the site (history, changes, uploads) is shown in your local timezone.
Search
The navbar search (and the home page’s big search box) understands:
- plain words, with English stemming —
emperorsfinds “emperor” "exact phrases"in quotes-wordto exclude,ORbetween alternatives
Title matches rank well above body matches. If nothing matches at all, the wiki suggests a near-miss title — “Did you mean …?”.

Search, plus two live lists: Freshly edited (recently touched pages) and Recent changes (the latest edits site-wide, with a link to the full changes feed).
